Group Animation Project
Concept Statement
Our animation, A Girl and Her Dog, focuses on growing up and going through life with a companion, specifically a dog. When it comes to childhood it is hard to describe exactly what that is considering that everyone has had a different experience, some good and some bad. Our animation aims to depict something that hopefully people are able to connect with regardless of their childhood experience, and that is having an unbreakable bond with something or someone, in this case it is a dog. Also, going through all stages of life with something or someone you love right by your side. There are two main characters in our animation, Ruby who is the girl and Max who is the dog.
How the animation starts out:
The animation starts out with the household of ruby and her parents. She is playing with her favorite toy which is a dog. Ruby’s Parents see how much she cares and loves for the dog, which causes them to consider getting a dog for her. The scene fades to her birthday party where Ruby is given a big gift to open. Upon opening her gift a dog pops out and starts barking at her. Ruby instantly falls in love with the dog. The animation then moves on to a repetitive but evoliving scene of Ruby when she starts her school journey. The scene begins by showing Ruby getting on the bus for her very first day of school and shows Max sitting in the driveway wagging his tail watching her walk away. The animation fades out and back in to now say “four years later”. It then fades into a crisp Halloween day, where Ruby is all dressed up to go trick or treating. Ruby sees that Max is also dressed up in a costume, which makes her incredibly happy. They took some pictures together to celebrate the holiday.
It then shows Ruby getting back on the bus, now at 8 years old. Max is now bigger and is still sitting in the driveway wagging his tail as he watches Ruby get onto the bus. The animation fades out and back in again saying “four years later”. Ruby’s house is shown once again on a peaceful day. Ruby is doing homework but feeling insecure about having to wear glasses. She wishes she didn't have to wear them but cannot see much without them. She hears a noise that startles her but it is just Max, who has his own pair of glasses to match with her. This instantly cheers her up seeing him in the glasses. It then shows Ruby, now 12 years old getting on the bus. Max waits in the driveway wagging his tail as he watches her step onto the bus. The animation fades out and back in one more time saying “four years later” and shows Ruby, now 16 years old on her birthday walking down the driveway and onto the bus. Max is now getting quite old but continues to sit patiently in the driveway, wagging his tail as he watches Ruby walk onto the bus. This repetitive scene represents the bond that Ruby and Max have. They have gone through life together and regardless of getting older they continue that bond.
At the end of the animation, Ruby is hanging out with Max in the yard after school when a brand new jeep pulls up. It is Ruby’s present for her 16th birthday. She gets up and gets in the car, ready to drive away. This leaves Max alone and a little sad because she usually only leaves him during school time. The animation fades out and back in again saying “2 years later” this time. Instead of Ruby’s house. The audience is shown the back of the jeep. There are boxes in the back of the jeep, and Max is looking at the jeep from the foreground. Ruby walks into frame with a box that says “Closet”, and puts it into the back of the trunk and walks away. She then walks back into frame again with a box that says “Books”. She puts the box into the back of the trunk and walks away again. When she walks back into frame, she gets into the driver’s seat of the Jeep, closes the door, starts the car, and closes the trunk, leaving Max alone. Ruby is heading off to college. The animation fades to black and the credits roll. Max is sitting on top of the credits. At the end of the credits, you can see a box with a heart and a paw print on it. Inside the box is a collection of pictures in frames from Max and Ruby’s life, including on her birthday when she received Max, on that halloween where Max dressed up, and when Max wore glasses to cheer Ruby up. This shows that even while Ruby is away at college, she won’t forget about Max, and will keep these precious memories right next to her every day. Although she may not see Max everyday, he is a very important part of her life and they have grown up together.
Reflection
Our group worked well together and we all collaborated on the storyline of the animation. We all followed through on our responsibilities of each creating one minute of the animation, and split up the miscellaneous work equally. What made our group successful is splitting up the work in a way where everyone was able to do something they were comfortable with and gave them the chance to show off their awesome animation skills. One challenge we overcame is that everyone was working at different paces, but noone panicked or felt rushed in the process, something that can be hard to avoid with group projects. Our storyboard did have to be adjusted to fit the 3 minute guideline so it is shown below.

Photoshop Series
Change is prominent throughout all of history, and as humans develop their ideas spaces are constantly going through renovations to best fit the needs of desires of consumers. Here in these pieces there is an exploration of how consumers view and react to the resort in front of them.
Illusion |
|
Using Illusion to place animals to a tourist attraction once made to lure in people looking to dine, shop, enjoy some drinks, and relax.. Racoons, Squirrels, turkeys, and black bears are all local animals who have been living in this area for years. Yet especially animals like squirrels and racoons are not wanted on the sight. By transforming this space into something the animals can explore and enjoy themselves in, there is a switch in the roles of the wildlife and the humans.
Repetition |
|
Trees are something seen in almost every aspect of this resort, yet often not only butterflies but people are repeating different aspects of their lives. Often time repetition is used in art to explore a pattern or an underlying theme, something shown in this repetition piece. Other times used to keep practicing a skill or work towards a goal. Repetition in both in the everyday life and the use of art guide
Transformation |
|
This space is already a tourist attraction, but transforming it into a candy land theme park shows how different different types of resorts can be.Taking two concepts with very different visuals, aesthetics, and vibes and then transforming them to create something new is prominent with this piece. The aesthetic Boyne Mountain gives off with the nature setting and higher class food compared to the transformed resort where the grass grows candy and the streets are flooded with peppermints contrast, the way the dark purple grass contrasts with the bright colors being explored through the candy.
Revealing |
|
The use of the text “Pretend it’s grass” reveals the truth that people pay to go to a resort that is keen on the idea that it is nature themed, yet is filled with so much man-made materials that only keeps expanding. The text wrapping onto the pavement wraps the text to become one with the ground. The cars on both sides of the pavement block in the text to make it the focus as it expands down the road. It was a smart remark, but it is enough to convey the message that is trying to be said.
